Beware the Devil’s Jesus [Alan Bean, “Friends of Justice”]

$

Can we select the Jesus that suits our style, or are we stuck with the guy in the Bible who preached good news to the poor and release to the captives?

The devil would give us a Jesus who turns hard stones into the warm bread; but the God of Christmas trades the security of heaven for the pungent hay of a feed trough.  In Matthew’s telling, incarnate God is hustled across the Egyptian border with the soldiers of a mad king baying at his heels.  The God of Christmas identifies himself with the poverty of shepherds and the early chapters of the salvation story “when Israel was in Egypt-land; oppressed so hard he could not stand.”

The devil couldn’t buy a Messiah of his own choosing, and we can’t either.

[ These are the last few paragraphs of Alan Bean’s post in the web site, “Friends of Justice.” This post was recommended by David Gustafson a friend, a counsellor and  a leader in restorative justice in Canada and around the world. You can listen to Dave on this YouTube. ]

careyontheroadslider

“Carey on the Road” is the Institute’s initiative to take seminars, workshops, courses, and retreats to the local church.

Our Church Based Program is a unique opportunity that allows for a group of students from one church, or from a regional cluster of churches, to study theology together without leaving their places of work and ministry. These students are able to journey together through an entire program, whether it is the Certificate/Diploma in Christian Studies or the Certificate/ Diploma in Ministry. In each location, leaders and students participate in designing a program that reflects their needs and the realities of their context.

Carey is currently hosting three campuses through this creative initiative.  CALGARY  |  CENTRAL ALBERTA  |  WINNIPEG

If you are interested in this program coming to your local church or letting us design a workshop or seminar for your context, please contact us at 604.225.5917 or institute@carey-edu.ca.

Special Mission: Domino Pizza, $10 and Faith (Jin Woo Kim)

I think that I have some of the “best” grad students on the UBC campus and I occasionally loudly proclaim it to anyone who would listen. I want to shout loudly about one of these great ones. His name is Jin Woo Kim and, as you can understand, English is not his first language. But ministering the good news of Jesus is his first passion.

In Character and Call 2, I ask students to give some “stranger” money away ($2 or $10 or 50 cents), and to examine the experience and particularly who you are “called” to give the money to, and what this does for the giver and the receiver (“character”).

Always an interesting assignment here are a few of the stories:

  • One person couldn’t get anyone to take his 10 bucks. But he tried so hard!
  • One ended up giving $500 to a poor Egyptian pastor (and the giver has almost no money and works 2 jobs to afford to come to Carey). A bit more than $5.
  • And one giver gave the $10 to a First Nations woman who was just released from prison and was so excited about it that she told her prayer group. Wonder of wonders, someone in the group felt God promoted her earlier in the day to give her $10. Now she has more money to give more away.
  • I really liked one student who typically carries around $5 to give away to whomever might have need but found $10 too much! He had to reexamine his “who is really needy list.” Made me laugh.

But hear this story from Jin Woo Kim:

“So, I am really worried about how can I handle this week discussion topic. But, God gave me special experienced by customer. Here is my story.

“Today is my 7th delivery by Domino Pizza. I was thinking how can I give ti away $10 to someone who I do not know. After this situation, I had an weird idea. His name is Andy from 2pm customer. He ordered 2 Large Pizza. He had to pay $30. However, when I visit his house, I just received $20 included Tips. He said, “Why do not received full price? Are you crazy?”

“So, I said that “Sure, I am crazy from God. Actually, I am a student from Carey theological college. This is my special mission. My professor will give me a bonus point if I give $10 to someone who I do not know. Do not hesitate me.”

“He had big smile and told me “ You are good student and weird pastor. I think that you will be a good pastor and funny pastor. I am not going to church since 2007. However, I have a curiosity, I want to knowing God.” What a unexpected Faith!!

“I can do everything through him who gives me strength. THANK YOU Lord, and thank Paddy for giving me special mission.”

In Honour of Dr. Barbara Mutch: Saying Farewell

barbaramutchIt is with deep regret that the Carey community is saying farewell to Dr. Barbara Mutch, Bentall Chair of Pastoral Studies and Directors for the Doctor of Ministry (DMin) and Master of Arts in Spiritual Formation (MASF) programs.

As Vice President Academic from 2004 to 2014, Dr. Mutch directed the academic affairs of Carey Theological College, leading in the development of its DMin, MDiv and MASF degrees, and obtaining a ten year accreditation for Carey’s academic programs from the Association of Theological Schools (ATS) in 2007.  She also taught at Regent College from 1996 to 2014, teaching a variety of courses including most recently the Seminar in Women’s Faith and Development. In 2014, she was recognized as one of Canada’s preeminent preachers with the Lester Randall Preaching Fellowship at Yorkminister Park Baptist Church.

Dr. Craig Smith, Professor of Biblical Studies at Carey, describes Dr. Mutch’s preaching:

“Barbara digs deep into the text and allows the text to dwell in her before she shares this experience with others. She is also a wordsmith, who carefully chooses and connects words together so that the listener is drawn into the text, opened to God and pushed out to the world.”

Dr. Mutch is known for her love of poetry and fiction, and her ability when preaching to meld the literary with the biblical. Dr. Mutch considers it a gift to walk with men and women in a deepening life of God, and to explore together what it means to make a life in the way of Jesus.

Two students shared their impressions of Dr. Mutch:

“She is a teacher that comes gently alongside students to help them discern direction and God’s sweet voice calling.”

“I was astonished at how meaningful it was for me to see a woman teaching and leading in a Christian context with such pastoral wisdom and intellectual clarity. “

Dr. Mutch will conclude her ministry at Carey in June 2015.  She will be moving to Pittsburgh in the United States where she will take up a new position as Director, of Accreditation and Institutional Evaluation for ATS. We are grateful for her contributions to the spiritual formation and community life that has formed both the people and place we call Carey. Her investment in her students and in the work of the College is her legacy. We wish her the best and entrust her “one wild and precious life” to God for the future.

In Honour of Dr. Paddy Ducklow: Announcing His Retirement

$

paddyducklyIt is with deep regret that the Carey community announces the retirement of Dr. Paddy Ducklow, Erb-Gullison Professor of Family Ministry.

Dr .Ducklow came to Carey in 1982 as an Adjunct Faculty, combining his career as a Psychologist with teaching theology at the graduate level. For many years he taught in the area of Practical Theology (Counselling, Marriage and Family, Pastoral Care and Conflict). In 2009, he was named the Erb-Gullison Professor of Marriage and Family Ministries.

Dr. Ducklow is known for his profound pastoral care and counselling and for making a genuine investment in the character and call of his students. As a psychologist trained in cognitive behavioural therapy and family systems theory, Dr. Ducklow has coached and modelled resiliency in relationship, creativity and courage in conflict, and vulnerability and vitality in ministry. Dr. Ducklow has embraced the person, providing personal assessment opportunities alongside a contract for change.

One student shared their impression of Dr. Ducklow:

“Throughout all my years of education, there are many teachers that I remember – but none of them have made on impact on me the way that Paddy has.  I know it sounds cliché, but I am a better husband, father, son, brother, friend, and pastor because of what he has taught me.  I have a better understanding of who God is and who I am.”

Dr. Jonathan Wilson, Pioneer McDonald Professor of Theology at Carey, shares:

“From the days of the Jesus people, through the renewing movement of the Spirit to his years at Capilano Christian Community Church, Paddy has followed Jesus on the winds of the Spirit. Have you heard Paddy say how much he likes change? Change is life; and Paddy loves life (and chocolate). That’s why Paddy loves God and the people of God and God’s wonderful creation. I’ve known Paddy as my professor, as a companion in ministry, as a counselor, as a raconteur, and as a caring friend. As he leaves us, we will laugh, and we will grieve. And our friendship will continue.”

Dr. Ducklow will conclude his ministry at Carey in August 2015 and continue counselling through private practice. We are deeply grateful for the wealth of wisdom and experience Paddy has brought to Carey, and wish him all the best as he enters into this new season of life.

CONVOCATION ADDRESS:

“What Do You Say For Yourself Now?” – Darrell Johnson (Audio)

Read by Chair of Senate (Glenn Rabuka) for Darrell Johnson

Darrell Johnson, today we celebrate and recognize your faithfulness in proclaiming the Word of God for forty-five years, in both the church and the academy, in the name of, and empowered by, our triune God.

Your parish ministry began in California, where you studied and completed your Master of Divinity degree at Fuller Theological Seminary. During your time in California, you joyfully pastored several Presbyterian congregations. Then God called you to take the Good News to Manila, Philippines as a missionary teacher and preacher. Your teaching ministry continued in the work of theological education, and training preachers in the kingdom of God. You taught at Regent College, as Associate Professor of Pastoral Theology in the Master of Divinity program. Your combination of scholarly diligence, biblical fidelity, and personal passion was transformational for the faculty, staff and students. You have been both mentor and spiritual father to many; graciously calling forth greater devotion and obedience in following Jesus.

After nine years of teaching, you accepted the call of First Baptist Church, Vancouver as Senior Minister. Through preaching and congregational care, you are committed to live in the Word, in community, and in the Gospel of Jesus Christ with clarity, love, joy and vitality. The fruit of your study in the Scriptures is seen not only in your preaching and teaching, but also in your writings. Your book, The Glory of Preaching: Participating With God in the Transformation of the World, is being used in a number of seminaries around the world, and your expositions of the Lord’s Prayer, Jesus’ Last Words, Revelation, and Ephesians, have helped form the faith and hope of your readers.

Darrell, your faithful ministry begins first and foremost with your family, whom you love deeply, and well. Along with Sharon, your wife of 45 years, you have sought to model the love of Christ to your four children and eight grandchildren.

You are one of the finest preachers of your generation and a person of integrity. You have left your footprints in Korea, China, Philippines, Singapore, England, Scotland, Ireland, Sweden, Armenia, Lebanon, and Nazareth. Here in your adopted Canadian homeland, you nurture young preachers by teaching seminars through the Carey Institute. And now in retirement, you continue to pursue your lifelong dream of equipping preachers by directing Carey’s new Centre for Preaching.

Before God and this gathering, Darrell, you are being recognized for your faithful proclamation of the Word of God and your extraordinary leadership in encouraging and empowering preachers. We confer upon you, Darrell W. Johnson, the Doctor of Divinity (Honoris Causa).

Many people have heard about what Carey has been up to.  We are excited about our ministry opportunity to our aging community.    Here is what one person shared about our programs:

The Centre for Healthy Aging Transitions is for such a time like this.   My parents are facing some challenges and caregiving is overwhelming for us.   The offerings from conferences and courses are supporting us but also our friends who are facing the same issues.   Thanks Carey. — Conference Attendee

Below is a summary of C.H.A.T.  We invite you to our upcoming events and look forward to connecting with you.

CHATCAREY3FINALclearWhitecircle1

The CENTRE for HEALTHY AGING TRANSITIONS (CHAT) has been established to facilitate a Christian faith-informed approach to healthy aging and life transitions associated with the later years of life.

CHAT’s ministries will:

  • Provide resourcing opportunities for individuals, church leaders and pastors through educational and dialogue events on aging that recover the core values of the biblical teaching. These resources will also address the current church and societal/cultural concerns in order to meet the ministry/mission opportunities and challenges of the aging boomer generation.
  • Commit to helping others find the necessary resources for all the varied transitions experienced on the journey of aging through a website and other social media.
  • Mobilize a transformative movement committed to engaging maturing adults and promoting the awareness that aging is a time of growth and value in becoming contributing elders for Christian service and mission.

Dr. William Willimon is the Professor of the Practice of Christian Ministry at Duke University Divinity School.

Author of over sixty books, he has been named one of the Twelve Most Effective Preachers in the English-speaking world. Willimon will be speaking on the theological implications of how Christians use the term “missional” in many different and sometimes contradictory ways.

The Trinity and Missional Leadership
Church leadership is already complicated and overwhelming in these changing times and in an age that makes leadership an idol. Doesn’t adding the Trinity to our struggles make leadership even more impossible? No. Come discover the liberating joy of leading not for political survival, cultural influence, social prestige, making people happy, or avoiding conflict, but for the joy of participating in the Triune God’s life and work in our world.

Ministry as Mission
God’s mission is to the world and God’s people are called into that mission. How might North American churches become God’s missional people? How might pastors be transformed from being managers of maintenance to mission movers in a changed cultural context?
_______
The GRENZ LECTURES are an annual series hosted by Carey Theological College in honour of the late evangelical theologian Stanley Grenz, a former faculty member of Carey.
.
Interview with Dr. Jonathan Wilson, Pioneer McDonald Chair, Carey Theological College
.
What excites you about our guest lecturer?
.
Our 2016 Grenz lecturer, Will Willimon, has experience as a parish pastor, Dean of the Chapel at Duke University, Seminary Professor, and Methodist Bishop. In every setting he has been an outspoken voice for the gospel’s strangeness, its real good news, and the transformation that it demands and enables in us. As a masterful preacher and teacher, he communicates with people across levels of education. People don’t need a theological education in order to understand Willimon. He also has a sneaky, wicked sense of humour.
He and his writing partner, Stanley Hauerwas, recognized early on the end of Christendom and the changes that requires of us whether we live in the US so-called “Bible belt” or pagan Vancouver.
.
Why did you decide on this topic?  Why is this timely and important?
.
Willimon proposed the topics for his lectures. It’s always good when a lecturer has some ideas and is enthusiastic about them. People use “missional” in many different and sometimes contradictory ways. For Willimon I think that “missional” points to the changes in culture and the new ways that God is calling us to be God’s people in the world. He recently retired as a bishop in the Methodist church and most of his writing and speaking now reflects the challenges and concerns that he discerned during that time of service.
.

Tell me about Stan Grenz, why the series is named after him and the vision for these free lectures sponsored by Carey?

Stan was my predecessor in the Pioneer McDonald Chair in Theology at Carey. He really was a pioneer of re-visioning evangelical theology and exploring new paths. His theology is profoundly shaped by the confession of One God: Father, Son, and Spirit, so it is wonderfully fitting that one of Willimon’s lectures combines the confession of God as triune with the challenge of missional leadership in the church.
.

How can we give or support Carey for more of these series?

All of the lectures are free and open to the public. And so is the parking! Invite your friends; encourage church leaders to attend. Also, we gratefully receive gifts in support of the ministry of Carey and the continuation of the Grenz lectures.

Blessed Easter | Grateful for What’s Ahead at CAREY

Dear Friends of CAREY:

We are so thankful for the vital way you give and support CAREY as we equip and train leaders here and around the world.

This month, I was able to experience our far reaching impact when I attended the graduation of 7 Doctor of Ministry students in Kenya.  It was a joyful celebration of their hard work, our continued commitment to mission, and God’s faithfulness to us all.

Looking ahead, we are grateful for:

  • Carey Theological College is offering 14 courses this spring.   In the Fall, our new Master of Arts in Christian Ministries online program will be launched. We plan to make it be available in English, Chinese, and Spanish.
  • Carey Institute’s undergraduate courses, certificates, and diploma programs continue to grow.  Carey on the Road campuses are in Calgary and Winnipeg.  Multiple workshops and seminars in spiritual formationpreachingleadership, aging, family health, and more are offered year round and can be hosted at your church.
  • Carey Centre continues to be a destination for retreats, conferences and meetings. We are glad for the opportunity to extend warm hospitality to all that enter our doors.

We are very blessed for God’s many gifts.  The resurrection of our Lord shatters our darkness and brings us fully into the light of God’s redemption.  Easter is the greatest act of generosity to an impoverished people.  Before the empty tomb, may we reflect upon His loving kindness and the abundance of God’s ultimate gift who is Jesus Christ.

I invite you to join me this Easter to pray for our students and alumni as they serve God in various churches and ministries. I also encourage you to pass on the word about our ministry.  Lastly, prayerfully consider partnering with us through giving this Easter season.Have a blessed Easter and May God’s peace be with you,

In partnership with:

With grateful sadness we remember Rob Des Cotes of Imago Dei Christian Community who passed into God’s nearer presence on April 6, 2016. Rob lived his life in the footsteps of Jesus, transparently sharing his faith journey with others so that we might be strengthened and enriched in our relationship with Christ.

For many years, Rob was a significant member of the Carey community where he contributed as a student, musician, instructor, mentor and friend. With great thankfulness for Rob, we miss his wise words, humble heart, and creative spirit. These gifts will remain to bless us forever.

From improving the water system for his local community in Kaleden, British Columbia, to establishing the first hospice in the South Okanagan; from working as an orchardist, to Area Manager and Supervisor of the BC Provincial Crop Insurance Program; from working as a Member of Parliament for Okanagan-Similkameen, to serving in the Royal Canadian Air Force, Fred King has brought his Christian witness to every realm of the public sphere.  Fred King’s contributions to international peace and security through the Royal Canadian Air Force, and his work as a parliamentarian exemplifies his commitment to human rights. He was elected at the NATO Assembly as the chair of the committee that monitored human rights issues in countries behind the Iron Curtain.

Now, at the age of 93, Fred enjoys the golden season of his life with his 3 children—Gordon, Margot and Cathie—8 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren.  His wife Audrey, of over 60 years, passed away in 2013.  After a lifetime of humanitarian service, Fred King articulates his hope and faith through the words of Paul, “I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:38).

CAREY’s 2016 graduation ceremony will be taking place Sunday June 19th at First Baptist Church. To sign up for CAREY’s 2016 graduation ceremony, please RSVP at http://grad.carey-edu.ca

It is with a deep sense of gratitude that we announce Dr. Jonathan Wilson, Pioneer McDonald Professor of Theology, will conclude his service at CAREY on December 31, 2017. He has served at CAREY since 2006.

CAREY celebrates Jonathan’s faithful service as a teacher, faculty leader, community builder, and friend. In announcing his departure, Jonathan says, “I leave Carey with a sense that my work here is complete. I am grateful to God for the opportunity to serve Christ and the people of God during my years at Carey.”

As a teacher, Jonathan has fulfilled his calling in the classroom, in books and articles, and in his speaking engagements in Canada and around the world. He has taught extensively at CAREY and across western Canada. He has also taught the basic course in theological reflection to the Bolivian and Kenyan Doctor or Ministry cohorts and has supervised eight Doctor of Ministry projects. During his years at Carey he has published three books, numerous articles, and completed the first half of a commentary on the “Book of the Twelve”.

As a faculty leader, Jonathan has challenged us to think and act theologically—to discern and participate in God’s mission in the world. He played a significant role in the design, implementation, and revision of the Master of Divinity degree and led the development and design of the Master of Arts in Christian Ministry.

As a community builder and friend, Jonathan has been a listener and counselor within the CAREY community, to several congregations and to Christian leaders in Canada, the US, and around the world.

As he concludes his time at CAREY, he looks forward to living out his vision of “servant-at-large for the kingdom of God” in new ways alongside his wife, Soohwan Park.

If you are a student or colleague of Jonathan, please send photos and a note of appreciation to communications@carey-edu.ca. Your material will be added to a memory book that will be given to him upon his retirement. Join us in blessing Jonathan as he steps into the next chapter of his journey of life and service .

Lastly, please pray for CAREY as we prepare to bid farewell to Jonathan in 2017 and continue in our calling to “expect great things from God and attempt great things for God.”

“I am a ‘Renaissance Man’,” exclaims Herbert H. Tsang, current president of the Church Ministry of Canada. From having three Master’s degrees and two doctorates in areas as varied as computational intelligence, algorithm design, and bioinformatics to choral and instrumental conducting and biblical worship, it’s enough proof that Herbert is more than proficient in the arts and sciences.

Herbert believes in “glorifying God by using the talent He has given [him] to the fullest extent.” He is most excited about “bringing God’s people to sing their faith through”. Herbert has just celebrated his 15th anniversary of leading a congregation singing hymns in greater Vancouver. This passion led to him being the director of the Centre for Worship at CAREY.

Learn how to use your God-given talent with Herbert as he talks about Technology through the Eyes of Faith on February 18. For more information, visit events-carey.ca.
